2011’s Last Office Party

December 30, 2011 – On the fifth day of Christmas and on the eve of a long weekend, a small group of Inspideans gathered to cheer Christmas amongst friends. The agenda was simple – eat, drink, exchange gifts and be merry!

Leading up to the day, the group had decorated their floor with Christmas decorations hanging from the ceiling and light fixtures. They even brought in a white plastic tree and decorated it with ornaments and lights. Each person wrote their wishes for Santa’s consideration.

After drinking Vitagen, eating jelly cups and Twisties, it was time to receive a random gift. It’s kind of like a pot-luck for gifts. Some people received food as gifts and others got some cute cuddly things. Only one person got their own gift! But everyone was happy and left ready to ring in 2012 that weekend.

Dream On!

December 10, 2011 – Because the studio will be the Gold Sponsor for Comic Fiesta – Malaysia’s version of ComiCon – Inspideans decided to join in on the fan-based self-publishing books the convention is famous for. That’s how Dream On! was born.

Featuring artwork from 36 dreamers, the book is a smorgasbord of drawings that are expressive, fun and risqué. It shows the untapped mine of creativity that is waiting to be unleashed if and when the world is ready to embrace it. This 70-page black-and-white book is a time capsule of its creators as they were in 2011.

Priced at RM10, Dream On! sold quite well at Comic Fiesta, considering that it is a first-time art book project. It is still available for purchase. If you’re interested in first editions, e-mail us!

How Do You Do Chengdu?

November 11, 2011 –  Being leaders of Inspidea have its perks. That’s why on November 5th through 8th, a team of Inspideans got a chance to travel to Chengdu, China. (Cheng as in hang, du as in do)

The team comprised of Heartbeat members – leaders of each department and community representatives – who went there to set the direction that Inspidea should follow in 2012. Through brainstorming and team building games, everyone explored ideas and shared stories that will make 2012 a bigger year for the studio.

But it wasn’t all just work. Everyone got a taste of the Sichuan (see-chew-one) peppers, used in practically every conceivable dish and sometimes dessert in Chengdu. The taste stayed in your mouth for a long time, your tongue were numb for a few hours and if you’re unlucky, you’ll end up in the bathroom most of the night.

The team also climbed Mount Emei, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It took four hours on the road just to get there, then another hour from the base just to get to the top! But the view is worth all the trouble and made the entire trip memorable.

Framed At Comic Fiesta 2011

December 19, 2011 – Inspidea once again set up a booth at Comic Fiesta 2011. For our international visitors, Comic Fiesta is Malaysia’s version of ComiCon but run completely and efficiently by comic, manga and anime fans and volunteers. This year’s CF was held for the first time at the KL Convention Centre. Also for the first time, Inspidea became the Gold Sponsor for this event!

Wanting to show what Inspidea has done, the wall of the booth was filled with over 40 artworks. The artworks featured were BGs, character lineups, model sheets and concept drawings. These drawings came from Inspidea’s own original shows or shows that we had produced for our international clients.

Just like last year, we also put up a table that had a long scroll that visitors could draw on. Many visitors did and as a result, we ended up with 2.5 scrolls full of drawings! We don’t know how long is one scroll but trust us, it’s long!

Thank you to all the visitors who drew on our scroll. We are inspired by your art and hope that our work have inspired you as well!

Nickelodeon To Debut Original Malaysian Animated Series Akis This September

Nickelodeon’s First Malaysian Animation Commission Premieres Friday on Nickelodeon SEA, September 28, 6.30pm

SINGAPORE/MALAYSIA/PHILIPPINES, 10 SEPTEMBER 2012: Nickelodeon, the number one entertainment brand for kids, today announced the launch of a new animated series Akis for regional viewers starting Friday, 28 September 2012. Akis is the first Malaysian animation production to be commissioned by Nickelodeon, created and produced by Malaysia’s top digital animation production company, Inspidea.

Akis is a 12-episode series of two-minute stories regaling the adventures of the highly imaginative Akis, a seven-year-old girl with a sugary sweet voice who loves to play-pretend all the time. Aside from English, Akis offers Malaysia viewers a second option of Bahasa Malaysia audio.

“Nickelodeon is always keen to develop engaging content and Akis’ antics are both endearing and hilarious, something children are bound to connect with,” said Syahrizan Mansor, Senior Director, Nickelodeon Programming & Creative, Asia. “This is the first time Nickelodeon has commissioned a studio in Malaysia to produce animated content and we are really pleased with what Inspidea has achieved. Akis is a great example of the top-notch content being produced in Malaysia.”

“We feel very happy and honoured to be part of this production. Although the show is set in Malaysia, viewers everywhere will relate to Akis because of the similarities in their experiences such as her school life where she studies, plays games, makes friends and goes on outdoor trips. The show is very funny and suitable for children to watch and enjoy with their family so watch the show and be inspired by Akis,” said Andrew Ooi, Managing Director of Inspidea.

Akis’ curiosity in everything and anything results in her play-pretending whenever the opportunity arises. This happens even in class, driving her teacher, Miss Rosi crazy. In one episode, Miss Rosi steps out of the class for a while and Akis immediately uses a spring leaf, water bottle and ruler and teaches her classmates how to make “spring rolls”. Occasionally, Akis’ enthusiasm for make-believe leads to flocks of sugary-cute mini creatures forming out of thin air.

The programme also features Akis’ wacky family – Ali, her know-it-all father, Eisha, her mother who is kind, stern and loud to everyone in the house and Naim, her sports-loving brother. Along with Akis’ best friend Yuyi and Iwan, the classmate who has a crush on Akis, the show aims to stimulate the growing minds of children by encouraging imaginative play. Additionally, the various settings in which Akis’ pranks takes place will give Nickelodeon viewers a glimpse of Malaysian culture.

Nickelodeon has been actively localising content in various languages for its audiences and it has taken this a step forward by developing content out of Asia. In February this year, Nickelodeon also debuted an original Malaysian production Cingkus Blues, a series about a cat and a rat who are housemates and best friends.
